Coal Miner Killed In Raleigh County

For the second week in a row, a West Virginia coal miner has been killed on the job.

Officials with the West Virginia Office of Miner’s Health Safety and Training say Gregory A. Byers, 43, from Beckley was pinned between scoops on Tuesday afternoon.

Byers died from his injuries Tuesday night at a Charleston hospital.

That accident happened at what is now Arch Coal’s Beckley Pocahontas Mine located near Eccles in Raleigh County, a former International Coal Group site.

Federal and state officials are investigating.

Last Friday, a coal miner was killed at Coal River Mining LLC’s Fork Creek #10 Mine in Boone County.
