Chamber Readies For Annual Meeting

Education, manufacturing, biotechnology and broadband will be just a few of the topics that will be tackled at this week’s annual meeting of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber President Steve Roberts says more than 700 people have already signed up for the three-day meeting. He’s expecting even more to show up on Wednesday when the event kicks off at the Greenbrier Resort.

"This is really where the movers and the shakers of the state gather to talk about state issues and state opportunities and what we can do to make things better," Roberts said.

It’s a big deal for small business owners.

"Chamber of Commerce members employ over half of West Virginia’s private sector workforce,” according to Roberts. “The business owners and managers, the investors, are gathering to talk about issues that are important to West Virginia."

Roberts says for small business owners with limited resources, the meeting gives them a chance to share and gain new ideas.

"A lot of time ideas emerge that people are able to borrow from each another,” Roberts said.

The keynote address comes on Friday from former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino. Also set to speak are U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and his Republican challenger Bill Maloney along with all four state Supreme Court candidates.

Roberts says when you get important speakers together with business leaders, it creates a special atmosphere.

"There’s just a synergy that comes from the amount of energy, goodwill, brain power. It’s just amazing the things that come from this meeting,” Roberts said.

This is the 76th annual Chamber meeting.
