Conan Takes the Golden Horseshoe Test

A West Virginian never passes up the opportunity to represent the Mountain State.   Charleston native and actress Jennifer Garner got the opportunity Wednesday night on Conan O’Brien’s show while promoting her newest movie "Butter."

"You wax rhapsodic about West Virginia," said O’Brien.

"Who doesn’t?" Garner retorted. "I grew up in West Virginia.  It’s just a beautiful, beautiful place.  It’s one of those places that just has a sense of place about it.  When you’re there, you’re not anywhere else."

Garner chided O’Brien, a Massachusetts native, about his knowledge of his native state.   O’Brien came up short on his state bird, state tree, and state fish as Garner rattled off the symbols every West Virginia eighth grader knows from their preparation for the Golden Horseshoe.

"Do you know the state song?" asked O’Brien almost rhetorically.

"Do you want to hear it?" shot back Garner with a grin.

She proceeded to belt out "The West Virginia Hills" off the cuff to an astonished O’Brien and to the delight of the late night TV audience.
