Morrisey Beats McGraw

Attorney Patrick Morrisey from Jefferson County defeated Democrat Darrell McGraw for the state’s Attorney General in Tuesday’s election. McGraw has held the role of Attorney General since 1992.
“First of all, I’m really honored and humbled to have been chosen as West Virginia’s next Attorney General,” Morrisey told MetroNews Tuesday night. “I promise to carry out the duties of that office in an honorable manner.”
Morrisey is a Republican health care attorney who largely works in Washington, D.C.
“We’re going to roll up our sleeves and we’re going to start fighting back,” Morrisey said. “Today is the day the attorney general’s office begins to fight back over Washington’s overreach.”
Tuesday’s race was tight throughout as just a couple of percentage points separated the two candidates as votes continued to come in. Morrisey finished Tuesday’s vote by beating McGraw 51 percent to just 49 percent. Morrisey received a significant boost from Berkeley County, beating McGraw by over 8,000 votes.
“We worked very hard in Berkeley County, Jefferson County and throughout the Eastern Panhandle,” Morrisey said. “And they know me. I’ve spent a lot of time working in the community over the years and I’m just honored and flattered. When this campaign started, we wanted to make sure we took our effort to every one of the counties and I’m particularly proud of our efforts across the state.”
McGraw, meanwhile, worked as an attorney in private practice from 1969 to 1976, he was elected to the state Supreme Court from 1976 to 1988, serving as Chief Justice in 1984 and 1988.
