Martinsburg QB Justin ‘Cookie’ Clinton


Martinsburg quarterback Justin “Cookie” Clinton scored five touchdowns in the first half to lead the Bulldogs to a comfortable first half margin.  Overall, Clinton finished with 5 of 10 passing for 109 yards and carried the ball 20 times for 217 yards and six touchdowns.  The six rushing touchdowns for Clinton are a playoff record.

 

 

2012 MetroNews Players of the Week:

Week One — Richwood quarterback Zach Bennett

Bennett had 172 yards passing and three touchdowns to go along with 216 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground in week one.

Week Two — Hurricane running back Zach Pate

Redskins’ running back Zach Pate finished week two with 247 rushing yards on eight carries, 158 yards receiving and five total touchdowns on the night.

Week Three – Woodrow Wilson quarterback Andrew Johnson

The senior quarterback led his team on a game winning drive late in the fourth quarter (including a 38-yard scramble on 4th-and-20) over Hurricane, converting the decisive two-point conversion as well.  In all Johnson tallied 241 offensive yards and scored four touchdowns in the Flying Eagles’ 35-34 win over Hurricane.

Week Four – Spring Valley running back Elijah Wellman

Spring Valley took down No. 2 Woodrow Wilson, 41-12, in week four of the season.  WVU commit and Timberwolves’ running back Elijah Wellman tallied 262 rushing yards, two touchdowns on the ground and took an interception back for a third score as well, being named the MetroNews Player of the Week.

Week Five – Meadow Bridge running back Jake Parker

Meadow Bridge running back Jake Parker put on a show, picking up 361 yards and four touchdowns on 48 carries in his team’s 34-24 win over Pendleton County.  Parker also added two two-point conversions as well in the win.

Week Six – Cabell Midland running back David Gaydosz

Cabell Midland running back David Gaydosz put up 328 rushing yards on just 16 carries in the Knights’ 70-34 win over Woodrow Wilson in week six.  He finished the night with six touchdowns on runs of 32, 77, 34, 19, 78 and 25 yards.

Week Seven — Oak Hill running back Jalen Jones

Oak Hill running back Jalen Jones led his team to a 34-14 win over Pt. Pleasant in week seven of the high school football season.  In all, the junior tallied 325 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.

Week Eight — GW running back Ryan Switzer

Switzer finished week eight with 331 yards on 21 carries and four total touchdowns in a win over Riverside.  Two of those scores came on runs of 85 yards and 66 yards, with another score coming on a 61 yard punt return.  Switzer on the season now has over 1,500 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns.  In the past five weeks alone, he has put up over 1,400 yards.

Week Nine – Washington running back Dante Washington

 

 

Washington running back Dante Washington helped lead his team to just its second win of the season as the Patriots upset previously unbeaten Frankfort, 55-29. Washington finished with 233 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

 

Week 10 – Martinsburg quarterback Justin “Cookie” Clinton

 

Class AAA No. 2 Martinsburg made another resounding statement in week 10, demolishing No. 6 Musselman, 73-0.  Bulldogs’ quarterback Justin “Cookie” Clinton finished the game with 189 passing yards and three touchdowns on 10 of 10 passing.  He also had six rushes for 96 yards and another score, being named the MetroNews Player of the Week.

 

Week 11 – Wayne running back Brandon Spurlock

 

Class AA top ranked Wayne erased any question of its supremacy in week 11, dominating fourth rated Bluefield from start to finish, 45-14.  Wayne running back Brandon Spurlock finished the contest with 165 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.  He was named the MetroNews Player of the Week.

 

Playoffs Opening Round – Wahama running back Kane Roush

 

Class A No. 3 Wahama whipped rival and No. 14 Buffalo for the second consecutive week in the opening round of the playoffs, 38-0. White Falcon running backs Kane Roush and Zach Wamsley combined for over 330 yards rushing and six touchdowns in the win. Roush finished with 208 yards and four touchdowns, while Wamsley added 128 yards and two touchdowns.  Roush was named the MetroNews Player of the Week.

 

Playoff Quarterfinal Round – Morgantown running back Shane Commodore

 

No. 5 Morgantown handled No. 4 Huntingon 35-14 in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs as Mohigans’ running back Shane Commodore finished the game with 240 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries.  He was named the MetroNews Player of the Week.
