Sago Mine Disaster seven years ago

Wednesday marked the 7th anniversary of the Sago Mine disaster in Upshur County.

On January 2, 2006 an explosion inside the mine killed one employee instantly, 12 others were trapped underground for nearly three days. But a lack of oxygen claimed all but one life — Randall McCloy.

At the time it was the worst mine disaster in West Virginia in nearly 40 years.

Congress passed the MINER Act in response to the tragedy which created stricter standards in the mine industry.
