High Court talks business

State Supreme Court Justice Robin Davis was the guest speaker at Tuesday’s Business Court Symposium at the Charleston Marriott sponsored by the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

The justices have been working on the business court, also known as Rule 29, for nearly two years. Back in October, they put their work into practice.

“We’ve got one case now in business court,” says Davis. She spoke to more than 100 attendees of the symposium about the mission of the court. “[I spoke] about how the cases are going to proceed and what the lawyers can expect”

Davis says being able to talk to groups like the chamber gets the message out.

“I hope that the business community and the state Chamber understand how hard we’ve worked on this rule,” explains Davis. “The fact that we acknowledge that businesses need resolutions of their cases in a timely fashion and this is one step in that process.”

In the past, business related cases could bog down a court decision because of the complicated and intricate nature of many of the issues.

The judges assigned to business court are more familiar business law and the ins and outs of the technical issues that come with them.

Davis believes in time, the business court will have a major impact on how West Virginia is viewed when it comes to judicial reform.
