WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Wake Forest chased WVU starter Dan Dierdorff after two-plus innings, routing the Mountaineers 11-3 on Sunday afternoon.
West Virginia (3-4) split a total of four games during the weekend stay, which included two games against Youngstown State.
The right-hander Dierdorff was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout. He allowed a second-inning homer to Jack Carey, but Dierdorff’s undoing came in a four-run third that included two bases-loaded walks.
The Demon Deacons (6-3) tacked on five runs against West Virginia’s bullpen in the fourth, with seven consecutive batters reaching base and Brett Armour’s two-run double making it 10-1.
That was plenty of support for Wake Forest starter Matt Pirro, who worked five innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Left fielder Jacob Rice had two of WVU’s eight hits, along with a sac-fly in the eighth that preceded Ryan McBroom’s RBI double. Second baseman Billy Fleming also had an RBI-single in the second.
WVU returns south to Myrtle Beach, S.C., from March 1-3 on Friday for the Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach tournament. The Mountaineers will face Indiana, UMBC and Florida Atlantic.
