WVU women rain 3s on Frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas — Taylor Palmer sank five 3-pointers, half of West Virginia’s season-high 10, in Saturday night’s 66-56 victory at TCU.

The Mountaineers (16-10, 8-7 Big 12) also held the Horned Frogs (8-18, 1-14 Big 12) without a field goal for a 13-minute stretch of the second half to record back-to-back Big 12 road wins for the first time.

Ayana Dunning had 15 points for WVU and Bria Holmes chipped in 10.

Zahna Medley’s 3 with 15:34 remaining gave TCU its final lead at 36-33. The Frogs next field goal didn’t come until sophomore Natalie Ventress hit a 3 at the 2:29 mark, buy which time WVU led by 14.

“They have a very young team,” West Virginia coach Mike Carey said. “Give TCU credit. They are very young at every position. They play extremely hard and are well coached and we feel very fortunate to get out of here with a win, very fortunate.”

West Virginia led 23-13 midway through the first half thanks to five 3s, four from Palmer. But TCU responded with an 11-0 run for its first lead before the Mountaineers pulled ahead 28-26 at half.

Jessica Harlee grabbed nine boards, helping WVU to a 43-41 rebounding edge. Harlee also added four assists, grabbed three steals and two blocks.

Ventress led TCU with 21 points, recording 15 of TCU’s 30 total second-half points, while also pulling down nine rebounds. Freshman Kamy Cole added 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

The team concludes the regular season with home games next week against Kansas State on Tuesday and defending national champion Baylor on Saturday.
