WVU bombs Bowling Green

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A five-run fifth inning led the West Virginia baseball team to an 8-2 victory over Bowling Green on Thursday night.

Beginning with catcher Alan Filauro, eight consecutive batters recorded hits for the Mountaineers (6-6). Second baseman Billy Fleming, designated hitter Matt Frazer, third baseman Ryan Tuntland, first baseman Ryan McBroom and right fielder Brady Wilson each drove in runs during the inning.

West Virginia equaled a season-high by pounding out 16 hits, and each starter recorded at least one. Center fielder Bobby Boyd had four hits, extending his hitting streak to 22 games.

Right-hander Corey Walter (1-2) picked up his first win, pitching six-hit ball over six innings. Walter threw 87 pitches and allowed two runs with four strikeouts and one walk. Right-handers Corey Holmes, Brock Dykxhoorn and Jared Hill also saw action in relief.

Bowling Green slipped to 3-8 with reliever Ben Singer (0-1) suffering through a disastrous fifth. He allowed three runs on five hits while recording just one out.

WVU went up 2-0 with two outs in the first inning thanks to Frazer’s double and McBroom’s single against Falcons starter Brt Fitzwater.

Action resumes tomorrow against Central Michigan at 3 p.m., with left-hander Harrison Musgrave starting for WVU.
