Interstate 77 could reopen later this week

Officials with the state Division of Highways say the goal is to reopen the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 in Mercer County on Thursday.

The highway has been closed since Wednesday, March 20th when a major rock slide blocked the road.  No one was injured but crews have, at times, been dealing with dangerous conditions.

For a week, traffic on I-77 north has been forced to exit the interstate at Bluefield and follow a slow moving detour along Rt. 460 to Princeton to reenter the highway.

At this point, state officials say they believe they have stabilized the hillside.  Crews are now working to haul the remaining material away from the site, by the truck load, to clear the road.
