LYNCHBURG, Va. — Senior Dan Dierdorff pitched brilliantly, giving the WVU baseball team a 2-1 victory Sunday and best-of-three series win against Liberty.
Dierdorff (2-4) pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
West Virginia (20-17) managed only four hits against Liberty starter Trey Lambert, who also went the distance but couldn’t overcome first-inning trouble.
Taylor Munden led off with a single to center and advanced to third on a hit-and-run by Bobby Boyd, who took second on the throw. Brady Wilson and Ryan Tuntland drove in Munden and Boyd, respectively, with back-to-back groundouts.
Liberty (19-18) cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when Bryan Aanderud doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Trey Wimmer.
WVU returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference game against Morehead State at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
