Mountaineers roll over Morehead with E’s

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia capitalized on five Morehead State errors during a 13-5 nonconference baseball win Tuesday at Appalachian Power Park.

The Mountaineers (21-17) had only eight hits but matched their second-highest scoring total of the season.

Morehead State (9-28) had nine hits and drew seven walks, but stranded 12 men on base.

WVU put up a four-spot in the bottom of the second inning with the first six batters reaching safely. Matt Frazer and Billy Fleming each drove in one run on a double and single, respectively.

Shortstop Taylor Munden doubled home a run and then scored on an error to make it 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Frazer notched his second RBI in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 7-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Jacob Rice, who led off with a single.

Morehead State miscues allowed Justin Fox and Chris Rasky to score in the sixth inning to give WVU a 9-1 lead.

Fox put WVU up 11-5 with a rare two-run squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh. Frazer scored from third base and Max Nogay raced home from second base on the bunt down the first-base line.

Pinch-hitter Michael Constantini added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on a double to right center.

Neither starting pitcher had much control. WVU freshman right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn lasted two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Morehead State starter Tyler Keele (2-5) allowed four runs on two hits in one inning with one walk.

Junior reliever Ryan Tezak (3-0) picked up the win with two effective innings of no-hit relief.

The Mountaineers return to action this weekend against Big 12 foe Texas in Austin. Friday’s opener will begin at 8 p.m., Saturday’s game is set for 3 p.m. and Sunday’s finale will be at 1 p.m.

All three games will be televised on the Longhorn Network, while the games can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network with Morgantown’s WAJR 1440 AM serving as the flagship station.
