Longhorns even series with 12-0 romp

AUSTIN, Texas — The WVU baseball team was hampered by two errors and managed just four hits during a 12-0 loss to Texas on Saturday afternoon, setting up a series rubber game Sunday.

WVU (22-18, 5-6 Big 12) had beaten Texas (21-16, 5-9) in Friday’s opener 1-0, behind Harrison Musgrave’s complete-game six-hitter.

But senior right-hander Dan Dierdorff (2-5) couldn’t replicate that effort in Game 2. Dierdorff was lifted after failing to record an out in the fifth inning, having allowed eight runs on nine hits and one walk. He had not surrendered an earned run in his previous three starts.

Texas starter Dillon Peters (4-2) held the Mountaineer hitters in check, surrendering just four hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked three.

The Longhorns put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth, including Ty Marlow’s single that glanced off Dierdorff’s leg into center field for two runs. Collin Shaw followed with an RBI double before Brooks Marlow singled in another  run.

Marlow notched two more RBIs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to left-center. The lead swelled to 10-0 on a three-run homer by Jacob Felts.

C.J. Hinojosa and Mark Payton each recorded three hits as five Texas batters enjoyed multi-hit performances.

Sunday’s Game 3 is set for a 1 p.m., and will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network. The games can be heard on affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network with the Morgantown’s WAJR 1440 AM serving as the flagship station.
