New look for Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU unveiled its new Nike football uniforms for 2013 before Saturday’s spring game. The gold, blue and white uniforms feature 27 combinations.

The big changes: Numeral fonts inspired by miners’ pickaxes and helmets with matte finish.

“I like our new look, and I know our players do too,” Dana Holgorsen said. “It was time for a change, and I am glad that we could incorporate a little of the state’s pride and history in this set of uniforms.

“You can’t even begin to put a value on how much uniforms and the look of your team plays in the recruiting game. We are pleased with the new look, and now it’s time to turn our attention to summer conditioning and getting prepared for the 2013 season.”

Other notes on the football fashion show:

♦ WVU’s options will include white helmets for the first time since 1979.

♦ A neat hidden element: The West Virginia state motto, “Montani Semper Liberi,” (“Mountaineers are Always Free”) is stitched inside the back collar of the jerseys.

♦ Another hidden design touch: A canary image will be stitched inside the front collar representing the birds miners once used to help protect them from dangerous gasses upon entering the mine.
