Indictment in death of Mingo County sheriff

A Mingo County grand jury has indicted the man charged in the shooting death of Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum.

The panel handed up a three-count indictment Monday against Tennis Maynard, 37, of Ragland.

Tennis Maynard was indicted for first-degree murder, attempted murder and fleeing police.

Maynard allegedly walked up to the parked cruiser of Crum on April 3 and shot the sheriff as he ate lunch in a parking lot near the Mingo County Courthouse. Crum was pronounced dead a short time later.

Maynard then wrecked his vehicle in Delbarton, where he allegedly pulled a gun on Mingo Sheriff’s Dept. Cpl. Norman Mines, who shot the suspect. Maynard remains hospitalized.

The three-count indictment is for first-degree murder, attempted murder and felony fleeing a police officer.

Cabell County Circuit Judge Paul Farrell presided as special judge over the grand jury.

It has been recently reported that the sheriff and Maynard knew one another from two decades ago. Crum helped with the Delbarton Boxing Club in the early 1990s and one of the boys he trained was Maynard, who was 15 at the time.
