Layoffs planned at Upshur plant

Layoffs are scheduled to start in July at an Upshur County plant.

Officials with Corhart Refractories in Buckhannon say up to 64 employees could be temporarily laid off beginning on July 1st.  They say the hope is the layoff number will be lower than that and will only last for a short time.

The company makes refractory products for the glass industry which, in general, make the glass more resistant to heat.

Corhart officials say the layoffs will be done in stages and will depend on current business conditions.

In all, Corhart employees about 150 people in Buckhannon.

Corhart’s parent company is Saint-Gobain SEFPRO which manufactures and sells glass refractory items around the world.
