Beckley mayor’s ethics case not ready for hearing

An ethics case against Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh will not be up for a hearing Wednesday as previously scheduled.

The state Ethics Commission and Pugh’s attorneys are involved in settlement negotiations. The issue will go before the Ethics Commission at its Thursday meeting.

Mayor Pugh was charged by the ethics commission in March 2012 after a review board found probable cause that he violated the Ethics Act nine times.

The charges center on a relationship Pugh had with the Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park. He allegedly used city services in exchange for personal gain.

Pugh, who was first elected mayor in Beckley in 1988, denies the charges.

The judge overseeing the case would have to sign-off on any settlement.
