Gyorko blasts first MLB homer

San Diego second baseman and former WVU standout Jedd Gyorko rounds the bases after hitting his first major league home run, which came off Cubs starter Scott Feldman on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.

Former West Virginia standout Jedd Gyorko belted his first major league home run on Wednesday night, an eighth-inning solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Scott Feldman.

The Padres second baseman, a preseason rookie of the year favorite after combining for 30 homers last season between Double-A and Triple-A, finally went deep in the big leagues on his 96th at-bat. Gyorko’s blast to left-center, his ninth RBI of the season, ended Feldman’s shutout bid, though the Cubs won 6-2.

“I’m glad to get it over with,” he told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “I hope it doesn’t take me another hundred at-bats to get the second one. I’ve been swinging the bat better of late.”

Gyorko’s 1-for-3 night raised his batting average to .250, up from .210 nine games ago.
