“No indication” from Wheeling Island Casino

It appears the management of Wheeling Island Casino is still trying to decide if it will renew its annual table games license with the West Virginia Lottery.

Lottery Director John Musgrave met with the new management at the casino resort earlier this week. He hoped to hear from them that they would renew table games at the annual price tag of $2.5 million but the Lottery says Musgrave received no indication.

The casino has been considering its next step after it suffered a setback in the regular legislative session when state lawmakers passed on a chance to reduce the licensing fee by $1 million.

Wheeling Island has been hit hard by gambling competition from newer casinos in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Musgrave says the table games revenue at Wheeling has been marginal in recent months.

The Lottery hopes the casino decides to renew. The license fee revenue goes right to the Bureau of Senior Services for in-home care for seniors.

The renewal is due July 1.
