Big 12 lauds Musgrave … again

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s Harrison Musgrave won Big 12 pitcher of the week honors Monday, only the second time a league pitcher has won the award on four occasions within the same season.

WVU left-hander Harrison Musgrave is 8-1 overall including a 5-0 record in Big 12 play.

The sophomore left-hander from Bridgeport, W.Va., scattered three hits and struck out a career-high 14 batters in Saturday’s 2-0 win over TCU. That also represented the most strikeouts for a Big 12 pitcher in a game this season. His 143-pitch effort included retiring 15 consecutive batters from the third to the eighth innings.

Musgrave (8-1), who owns a 2.14 ERA and three complete games in his last four outings, seems to be in a two-man race with Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray for Big 12 pitcher of the year.

During conference play, Musgrave is 5-0 with a 1.02 ERA and has held opponents to a league-low .145 batting average, representing a primary reason why the Mountaineers are tied for second place in the Big 12 standings with one week left in the regular season.

Next Thursday at Oklahoma State, Musgrave will get to face reigning Big 12 player of the week Gage Green. The Cowboys outfielder went 7-for-10 against Oklahoma this past weekend when OSU took two of three games.

Green stole home for an insurance run in Game 2 of the Bedlam series, which the Cowboys subsequently won 4-3.
