Still no charges in Wheeling fight-related death

WHEELING, W.Va. — Wheeling police and the Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office remain undecided on the direction they’ll take on the recent death of a man after a night of drinking and two fights.

The victim, Anthony Demello, 22, of Benwood, was involved in two separate fights with two different people on the night of May 9 at a home in the Fulton section of Wheeling.

Detective Greg Harris told MetroNews Monday Demello got into a fight with a man at the party about 1 a.m. When police arrived, no one present wanted to press charges and the matter looked to have been resolved when the other man had left. Police ordered Demello to leave as well. He did, but then returned.

“About 2 in the morning we get a call that he was punched one time, fell down, hit his head on the concrete on the sidewalk,” Harris said. “He was taken to the hospital and about 3:30 the following day he died.”

Harris said the suspect in the second fight has spoken with police, and several other witnesses have cooperated with the investigation also. Harris planned more discussions about the case with the prosecutor to determine what charges, if any, should be filed.
