Willie Akers coming home

LOGAN, W.Va. – Logan County Commissioner and state basketball legend Willie Akers is scheduled to return to his home this weekend, according to MetroNews affiliate WVOW radio in Logan.

Willie Akers has been receiving lots of support in his recovery effort.

Akers, 75, was seriously injured in late February when he stumbled and fell after a basketball game at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum. He fractured his C 6 vertebra and underwent surgery a week later at a Charleston hospital.

In March, Akers’ condition improved to the point he was transferred to a rehabilitation center in Atlanta. Recently, Akers was moved to the outpatient treatment program at the facility.

Family members indicated that Akers will return to Georgia in late summer for additional physical therapy.

Akers was an all-state player whose Mullens High School team won the Class AAA championship in 1955. He played three seasons at WVU and became a co-captain for the Mountaineers.

During 21 seasons as a high school coach, Akers won more than 400 games and led Logan High to the Class AAA state championship four times.
