Reaves returns as women’s assistant

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. West Virginia women’s basketball coach Mike Carey announced the return of Sharrona Reaves as an assistant coach Friday.

Sharrona Reaves was hired Friday as an assistant on Mike Carey’s women’s basketball staff.

Reaves served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Carey from 2003-06, helping assemble two top-20 recruiting classes, including the signing of Mountaineers standout Olayinka Sanni.

“We’re excited to have Sharrona back with the Mountaineer family,” said Carey in a WVU release. “Our program experienced a lot of success the first time Sharrona was a part of our staff, and I have no doubt she will bring knowledge and experience she has gained since, back to the program.”

During Reaves’ previous tenure, WVU ended a 12-year drought by reaching the NCAA tournament in 2004, the WNIT finals in 2005 the Big East tournament finals in 2006.

“I want to thank coach Carey, Oliver Luck and Terri Howes for the opportunity to help with the women’s basketball program at WVU,” said Reaves. “I’m really excited about coming back.”

After leaving Morgantown in 2006, Reaves became the head coach at NCAA Division II Long Island University C.W. Under her guidance, C.W. Post had two consecutive winning seasons in 2007 and 2008, the Pioneers’ first back-to-back winning seasons in 14 years.

From 2008-10, Reaves was assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on the Mississippi State women’s staff, helping guide the 2009 Lady Bulldogs to the second round of the NCAA tournament and the 2010 squad to the program’s first Sweet 16 appearance.

Following her time with Mississippi State, Reaves left coaching to serve a short stint as the compliance coordinator at Alabama State University.

Reaves dipped into the junior college ranks last season, serving as head coach at the College of Central Florida.

Reaves previously coached three seasons at Troy University and one year at Cal.

Reaves was a forward on Alabama teams that reached the 1993 Sweet 16 and the 1994 Final Four.

Reaves graduated from Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla., with an associate’s degree in English in 1992, prior to earning a bachelor’s of communication degree in 1995 from Alabama.

Reaves has two children, Kenden and Kimora.
