The U.S. Department of Education granted the wavier requested by the West Virginia Department of Education to the requirements of No Child Left Behind.
The state department sought release from some of the obligations pertaining to federal rules and deadlines on improving learning and instruction. The state believes it is better equipped to address West Virginia’s shortcomings than the feds. The state DOE has implemented a series of reforms stat wide they believe will elevate student performance.
Under the waivers, the state will be allowed to use its own accountability system and identify more readily the struggling schools in the state and implement ways to improve their learning.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is scheduled to join state education officials at a news conference Monday afternoon.
