Mazey bypassed for Coach of the Year award

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — West Virginia’s Randy Mazey, whose team wound up third in the Big 12 regular-season standings after being unanimously picked to finish last, was bypassed for Big 12 coach of the year honors Tuesday.

Still, it’s hard to argue with the award winner, Kansas State’s Brad Hill, who took a team picked seventh in the preseason and led the Wildcats to their first Big 12 title since 1933.

K-State’s Ross Kivett also captured conference player of the year. The leadoff-hitting second baseman’s .359 average was fourth in the Big 12, while he finished second in hits (55), second in steals (26), third in runs (46), sixth in on-base percentage (.434).

Kansas State’s Jake Matthys won top freshman.
