Musgrave tabbed Big 12’s top pitcher

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — West Virginia’s Harrison Musgrave, a year removed from Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, earned Big 12 pitcher of the year honors Tuesday.

The redshirt sophomore had a 5-0 league record and a 1.02 ERA to lead all starters in conference play. Musgrave won the award over Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray, who projects to be the first pitcher taken in June’s MLB draft.

“It’s a really big honor, because there’s a lot of great pitchers in our league,” said Musgrave, who is 8-1 overall with a 2.14 ERA.

“He has competed with and been better than some of the best pitchers in the United States,” said Mountaineers coach Randy Mazey. “It’s a great story of a kid who has come so far in a little amount of time.”

Gray is 8-2 overall with a 1.69 earned run average and 3-1 in Big 12 action with a 1.97 ERA.

ALL-BIG 12 TEAMS

Save for Musgrave, West Virginia had no other first-team All-Big 12 selections, though first baseman Ryan McBroom and designated hitter Matt Frazer were second-team picks.

McBroom leads the conference with 11 home runs, is tied for fifth with 43 RBIs and sits seventh in slugging percentage (.515).

WVU’s honorable mention selections were outfielder Bobby Boyd, infielder Billy Fleming, catcher Alan Filauro, outfielder Jacob Rice, outfielder Brady Wilson and outfielder Ryan Tuntland.
