CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — The Memorial Day weekend is the traditional opening of public swimming pools across the state, but it’s an extra special opening weekend in Clarksburg. The city is cutting the ribbon on a new $3.4 million Splash Zone.
“It has many things to it,” said Mayor Patsy Trecost. “It has a lazy river, it has slides, it has a children’s area, and it has a six-lane lap pool. We’re very excited.”
The facility was constructed through an investment by the city and by taxpayers who supported the project through a levy. While many cities are abandoning the idea of a public pools, the mayor said his town is wholeheartedly embracing the idea.
“The pool is for everyone,” Trecost said. “Every senior citizen all the way down to a toddler will be welcome.”
The daily admission rate is $9 for adults (12 and over), $7 for children 3-11, and free for younger toddlers. Admissin after 4 p.m. is $5.
Trecost said officials expect the water amusement center to attract people throughout north central West Virginia.
“It’s going to invite people into Clarksburg from the whole region,” he said. “We’ve created an atmosphere in Clarksburg that we want to invest back into our city. Invest back into roads, the water system, and back into things people can share.”
The Splash Zone is located in the Veterans Park near the Clarksburg VA Center. Its grand opening is scheduled for noon Saturday.
