Hanner is Herd’s latest defection

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall fans will need to have their rosters in hand when the 2013-14 basketball season begins. They likely won’t recognize anyone on the floor wearing kelly green.

Jamier Hanner became the latest defection from The Herd’s basketball program Friday. He joins DeAndre Kane, Chris Martin, and D.D Scarver, all of whom left the team this offseason.

“As we continue to mold our roster to assure a very successful future and foundation for Marshall basketball roster changes are inevitable,” said Marshall coach Tom Herrion in a release. “Jamir Hanner has decided to leave our program at this time to explore other opportunities.”

Adam Zagoria of SportsNet New York, broke the news of Hanner’s departure Friday, reporting Hanner planned to transfer to the University of Buffalo.

Hanner, a 6-foot-8 forward, played in 53 games over two seasons with The Herd and averaged just 7.2 minutes per game. Last season, Hanner scored 3.6 points and grabbed 2.5 rebounds per game.

“Our newcomers along with our returning pieces position us for a positive 13-14 campaign,” Herrion said. “As a staff we are very pleased with our recent roster additions as well as the possibility of future members of our team.”

Herrion and his staff have attempted to patch the roster together with junior college transfers such as Shawn Smith, Cheikh Sane, Justin Edmonds and Jaylen Brantley.  Ryan Taylor and Kareen Canty will be eligible as well in 2013-14 after sitting out as non-academic qualifiers last season.
