Maloney starts new think tank

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former Republican gubernatorial candidate says his new think tank is designed to build on the ideas he first heard on the campaign trail when he ran for governor in 2011 and 2012.

Bill Maloney was at the University of Charleston in Kanawha County to launch the Center for a Brighter Future, a nonpartisan think tank designed to generate ideas that could potentially help West Virginia in the long run.

“You look at what you can do with your life, I know we ran for governor and almost made it, but we feel like it’s the best use of our time right now and the way we can make the biggest different,” Maloney told MetroNews.

Bill and Sharon Maloney are launching the Center for a Brighter Future.

He says the think tank will start with issues like ethics reform, energy independence, tax policy and healthy lifestyle initiatives.  “It’s all going to be studies based on science and common sense solutions that can be politically achieved,” said Maloney.

He denies claims that the creation of the Center for a Brighter Future, which will also involve his wife Sharon, is a first step toward running for Congress.

“There are a lot of people after me to do that, but that’s not in our plan at all,” said Maloney.  “Running for office is not in our plans at all right now.  We just feel this is the best use of our time and the best way we can give back.”

Maloney is the principal of Cow Run Energy LLC and Drill Leader LLC.  He founded a number of companies including North American Drillers.
