MONTGOMERY, W.Va.—The WVU Board of Governors approved a $2.3 million property purchase Thursday for a new baseball stadium at University Town Centre near Morgantown.
Board members approved the plan with no discussion. The matter was part of the BOG’s consent agenda during the meeting that took place at WVU Tech in Montgomery. The stadium is projected to cost $16 million and will be utilized by WVU, Division II Fairmont State and a Single-A team from the New York-Penn League.
Construction of the ballpark, along with a $28 million exchange off Interstate 79, is to be funded through a tax-increment financing district that passed the state Legislature earlier and signed into law by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin in April.
Site preparation could start by December and games could be played there by the 2015 spring season.
