MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s men’s basketball program ranked third in the Big 12, while its football team was in the middle of the league, according to the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Rates released Tuesday.
The APR, formulated on a rolling four-year average, is used by the NCAA to measure real-time academic success of student-athletes and their advancement toward graduation. The latest scores are calculated upon the academic years 2008-09 to 2011-12.
Teams currently must reach a minimum four-year average score of 900 — or 930 over the most recent two years — to maintain postseason eligibility. All 17 Mountaineers’ athletic teams scored safely above the 900 level, and WVU’s overall athletics department score of 973 was within one point of the Division I average (974).
However, the minimum four-year scores are climbing to 930, or 940 over two years, beginning with the 2014-15 postseason. That means WVU’s baseball team — currently with a four-year APR of 922 — could be in peril, anchored by a single-year score of 882 in 2011-12.
