Speeders stopped on part of West Virginia Turnpike

CHELYAN, W.Va. — State Police say speeding is a problem among commercial vehicles on part of the West Virginia Turnpike.

A blitz this week from State Police and members of the West Virginia Public Service Commission included 74 traffic stops on commercial vehicles.

During those stops, officials say a total of 102 citations were issued and most of those were for speeding.

What troopers are calling the “enhanced patrol” happened between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday on the section of the Turnpike between Pax in Fayette County and Cheylan in Kanawha County.

The speed limit is 60 mph in the area that has seen a series of accidents, some involving commercial vehicles, in recent weeks.

State Police say troopers will be increasing their road patrol presence there in the coming weeks to help reduce speeds and possibly bring down the number of crashes.

Passenger vehicles will likely get more attention on those future patrols.
