No injuries following Kanawha River plunge

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A woman walked away from a Friday morning accident that sent her minivan plunging over an embankment near the state capitol and into the Kanawha River.

Charleston police officers say the woman lost control of the vehicle at about 5 a.m. when attempting to turnaround on Kanawha Boulevard. The van went across the median, over the retaining wall that separates the street and walking path and down over the embankment into the river.

The woman was able to make it out of the van and to a convenience store to call for help. She was hospitalized Friday.

The Charleston fire and police departments used tow cables to get the van out of the river.
