Steubenville teen classified as Tier II sex offender

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — A teenager convicted of rape has been ordered to register as a sex offender every six months for 20 years.

The Tier II classification was handed out to Trenton Mays at a Friday hearing by Judge Thomas Lipps.

In March, the 17-year-old Mays and co-defendant Ma’lik Richmond — football players at Steubenville High School — were found to be delinquent, the juvenile court equivalent of guilty, on charges related to the rape of a 16-year-old-girl.

Richmond and Mays were Steubenville High student-athletes at the time of the crimes in August 2012.

Both were sentenced to at least one year in juvenile jail for rape with the possibility of being held until they’re 21. Mays was sentenced to an additional year in jail on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to be served following his rape sentence is completed.

At a later date, a judge will determine how often and for how long Richmond will be required to register with his local sheriff’s department upon his release from the Department of Youth Services.

According to Ohiobar.org, sex offenders are broken down into three classifications: a Tier I offender is required to register annually for 10 years, Tier II offender is required to register every 180 days for 20 years and a Tier III offender must register every 90 days for life.
