First 2015 commit has family ties

Morgantown High junior tight end/defensive end Stone Wolfley (88) committed to WVU this weekend after receiving an offer from Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia picked up its first football commitment for 2015 this weekend after offering a scholarship to Stone Wolfley, a homegrown prospect with deep family ties to the program.

A 6-foot-4, 238-pound tight end/defensive end who’s entering his junior season at Morgantown High, Wolfley described himself as “a West Virginia boy” who grew up in house of WVU fans. His father Dale, currently in his sixth year as coordinator of player relations for WVU, was a four-year offensive line letterman at WVU from 1987-90, and Wolfley’s uncle Ron played running back for the Mountaineers from 1981-84.

“I’ve always wanted to go to school there,” Wolfley said. “I’m looking forward to visiting other colleges but West Virginia is where I set my heart on going. I’m verbally committed to them.”

The offer from head coach Dana Holgorsen surprised Wolfley, who was focused on helping his high school team advance in WVU’s 7-on-7 camp Friday and Saturday.

“I really wasn’t expecting it all,” he said. “It turned out to be a pretty awesome weekend.”

After starting as a sophomore on a Morgantown team that reached the Class AAA state semifinals, Wolfley said he’s energized to ramp up his summer regimen of strength training and conditioning.

“I can lose this offer as quickly as I gained it,” he said. “I may be decent now, but I want to be great, so I need to push myself harder than anyone else can push me.”

Wolfley’s father told MetroNews that working alongside Holgorsen’s staff has provided a first-hand perspective.

“I know the kind of people these coaches are because I’ve watched them up close,” Dale Wolfley said. “I know they’ve got the program headed in the right direction.”

As for where his son might project in the college game, Wolfley imagined an H-back role similar to that of current sophomore Cody Clay.

“He likes the way Holgorsen is bringing in the tight end sets, but who knows where Stone will wind up position-wise,” dad said. “He could be an O-lineman or he could be a D-lineman, because he’s 6-4 entering his junior year and he’s just starting to get into his body.”
