First section of Summers County highway to be dedicated

HINTON, W.Va. — Dignitaries will gather in Summers County Monday to open the first stretch of the New River Parkway.  A ribbon cutting is slated for just more than a mile of the completed road between Hinton and Sandstone.

“This is the first section of the New River Parkways,” said Department of Highways Spokesman Brent Walker.

“We were able to get at least this first mile and a half built and allows us to focus more attention on the remaining eight and a half mile section.”

The New River Parkways is a long talked about road project in West Virginia which would give motorists the chance to travel the picturesque riverbank from I-64 near Sandstone to Hinton.

“It was one of the oldest projects on highways’ books,” he said. “We were able to break ground about a year and a half ago and now able to cut the ribbon and open this first section.”

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.
