West Virginia natives hit the right notes

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kathy Mattea and Charlie McCoy helped open Charleston’s 9th annual FestivALL Friday night with a concert at Haddad Riverfront Park on the Kanawha River.

The native West Virginians, who have collected dozens of awards over the years for their musical accomplishments, performed before an enthusiastic crowd at the Moses Automotive Group’s Live on the Levee.

The free concert was also part of the state’s ongoing 150th birthday celebration. Many of those at the concert traveled down Kanawha Boulevard at its conclusion for a second straight night of the showing of West Virginia 150 in 3D on the state capitol and fireworks.

The state capitol complex is set to be busy Saturday with as many as 4,000 participants expected in a chili cook-off and music and other activities on the capitol grounds leading up to a third and final fireworks show Saturday night.
