Sam Huff stepping out of broadcast booth

WASHINGTON, D.C. — West Virginia football legend Sam Huff is stepping out of the broadcast booth of the Washington Redskins after calling NFL games for 38 years.

The 78-year-old Marion County native began doing less on the broadcasts last year when he did only home games and Redskins’ road games against the Cowboys and Giants.

Huff, a member of both the college and pro football halls of fame, started doing Redskins games after his playing career was over. He began that illustrious career with the New York Giants in 1956 before being traded to the Redskins in 1964.

The Redskins’ flagship station ESPN980 announced Huff would be part of pregame coverage on some of the games this season. A station executive said Huff was not forced out.

Huff will not be replaced. The broadcast team will remain Sonny Jurgensen and Larry Michael in the booth and Doc Walker on the sidelines.

Huff grew up in Farmington and went to WVU on a football scholarship. He starred for teams coached by Art “Pappy” Lewis. The 1954 Mountaineers played in the Sugar Bowl. Huff went on to star at linebacker for the football Giants. He was featured in a 1960 CBS Television special “The Violent World of Sam Huff.”

Huff was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.
