Coach: Win-win for WVU and Sims

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia’s running back core received a boost last week when former Houston standout Charles Sims announced he would be officially transferring to WVU. It was a decision that his former high school head coach, Keeath Magee, saw coming.

“Deep down inside, he has some gas left in the tank, so to speak, and he wants to do it at the collegiate level,” Magee said. “Probably a big part of (picking WVU) was the fact that one of his best seasons at Houston was when Coach Holgorsen was the offensive coordinator.”

Sims tallied 698 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground during that freshman season. But, he also did a significant amount of damage catching passes in Holgorsen’s system, taking in 70 catches for 759 yards and another score.

“It’s a win-win for everybody. It’s a win for Charles because he gets a chance to fit in an offense that he’s played in previously and did real well in,” Magee said. “I think it’s a win for West Virginia in that they are getting a guy that is going to work extremely hard and a guy that will never rest just because of what he’s done a year ago or two years ago.”

As for Sims’ game overall?

“He does a real good job in pass protection, and he’s able to do that because of his size and strength,” Magee said. “He brings it all to the table. He’s that total type of athlete – he has speed, he has the ability to take it to the house from anywhere on the football field, and he also has the ability to be one-on-one and win that battle because of his strength.”
