Challenging slate again for Brooke in 2013

WELLSBURG, W.Va. – Sean Blumette’s first year at Brooke may not have gone the way he anticipated.

The Bruins finished last season a disappointing 3-7, which was their first season below .500 since 2004. Still, there’s reason to believe 2013 will go differently for the Bruins, especially with the firepower Brooke returns in the backfield.

Justin Loughrie, Matt Hartman and Nigel Bowland will all see carries for the Bruins.

“We have a really good core in the backfield that we can hand the ball to,” Blumette said.

Brooke will also have play-makers on the outside that will alleviate some pressure from the running game. Tight end Joe Staffileno, along with receivers Thomas Cole and Heath Hildreth will be the top targets for whomever replaces three-year starter Alec Buchmelter at quarterback – a West Virginia Wesleyan signee.

“We got a lot of guys to get the ball to,” Blumette said. “My biggest problem is I only have one football to give them.”

Brooke will head into the 2013 season with a new quarterback after the graduation of three-year starter Alec Buchmelter.

For Blumette, there’s more to like about his team than just the playmakers on the offensive side of the ball.

“Our defense has looked tremendous this spring, but again we are returning seven starters off of a pretty tough defense last year,” he said. “I think we’re going to do an awesome job of getting to the ball.”

After appearing in back-to-back state title games in 2009 and 2010, the Bruins have built a program that is used to success year-in and year-out.

“As far as winning expectations go, I don’t think there’s any shame in saying that our school and community expects us to be in the playoff hunt and we’re going to do our best to deliver,” he said.

But to get back to their dominating ways, a very challenging schedule awaits the Bruins. First, there’s TRAC games against perennial playoff teams University, Morgantown and Wheeling Park. And then there’s daunting non-conference games against state runner-up Cabell Midland and prestigious Steubenville, Ohio.

“There’s really not an easy game on this slate,” Blumette said.

Brooke will start the season on the road at Morgantown August 30 before its home opener September 6 against Taylor Allerdice (PA.).
