5 picks: Bob Friend weighs in

Boo Weekley looks over the edge after his shot on the 17th hole during the U.S. Open golf tournament at Merion Golf Club.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Bob Friend, director of operations at Pikewood National Golf Club in Morgantown, submits his five picks for this week’s Greenbrier Classic:

Boo Weekley: He won at Colonial recently and plays these type of golf courses well. All three of his PGA Tour victories have occurred in the south and on shorter venues.

Gary Woodland: His game is showing signs of life and he is due to win again on the PGA Tour.

Charles Howell III: The University of Kansas graduate has played well here in the past and is a shaper of shots—perfect for Old White.

Brendon DeJonge: The long-hitting South African, who played collegiately at Virginia Tech, finished third at the Greenbrier in 2010.

D.A. Points: A fourth-place finisher at the Greenbrier in 2010, Points won this year in Houston and finished second in New Orleans.
