FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont City Manager Jay Rogers says the city was ready for the influx of people for a Tuesday rally from the United Mine Workers of America.

The rally is part of the UMWA’s ongoing fight with Patriot Coal, Arch Coal, and Peabody Coal as union members plan to protest the fallout from the Patriot bankruptcy.  Past rallies have drawn as many as 10,000 people.

“Our police force has worked tirelessly over the last couple of weeks to plan and make arrangements for everything from parking to getting individuals participating in the rally in and out of the area of the rally,” said Rogers.

The last rally the UMWA held in West Virginia was in Charleston back in April and it drew more than 7,000 people.  Rogers said that’s why officers have been in contact with police in Charleston, to see how they handled the crowds.

“The best we can do is to take a page from those rallies in Charleston, St. Louis and other areas and prepare for it that way,” says Rogers.

Rogers said he is hoping the average Fairmont resident won’t notice much is happening except for an increase in traffic Tuesday morning.  Rogers says most of the interruption in traffic will occur around the Fairmont State University campus.

“They’re not there to disrupt your community, they’re there just to support their cause,” Rogers said about the UMWA members.

The rally is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Majority Whip Caputo has to get some air time in his home County in front of a friendly crowd after his recent close races. The unions supported Obama because he is a Democrat and heaven forbid they support a Republican - any Republican - especially the poor choices the GOP has put forth in the last two (2) presidential races.

To the UMWA's defense, this Patriot case may have much broader ramifications across other industries and pension/retirement plans. If it holds true, the UAW and others had better watch out...

The bottom line is we do not need Unions...period

Sounds like you all hate President Obama then want to whine when he does not come running to save you. Anybody there understand how politics work in the real world???

  • wvtd

what is the umwa going to whine about when the coal mines are all shut down? nothing, ole joey and his bff obama will take care of all of their needs.

  • CaptainQ

When will the leadership of the UMWA ever admit they back the WRONG candidate in 2008 when that union threw their support behind Obama? Sort of like a union of chickens supporting Colonel Sanders for their leader, at least, that's the way it turned out in the end (points at the EPA).

And how about those WONDERFUL Democratic party allies of theirs! Look at ALL the HELP they've given the UMWA while fighting the 'legal but horribly unfair' tatics of Patriot/Peabody Coal! Oh my! President Obama sure stepped right in there to 'right this great wrong,' now didn't he?

Yes indeed! Obama is certainly a 'friend' of West Virginia, now isn't he? No wonder EVERYONE in this state adores him SO much! Yeah, all those lopsided Election Results from 2008 and 2012 were just flukes, right?

Thses people keep voting for people who are anti coal...they get what they deserve...

If they wanted garanteed pension and benefits they should have gone to work for the Gubmint...

Fairmont must be a convenient location for Sen. Manchin's appearance to solidify his base in the looney left in Marion County.

Why doesn't UNWA rally at the white house? They would love to have them, you know that the white house loves union folks, because they are huge donor's.

YES AX MAN , Isn't it odd that the UMW union leaders never condemns Obama that is "going to" eliminated coal production in West Virginia ! But regardless of what the UMW does as far as protest marches an rally's, . King Coal Is going out of business in not only West Va, but all coal producing states ,
