Tractor trailer and train collide in Putnam County

HURRICANE, W.Va. — An investigation is underway into a train crash in Putnam County involving a semi tractor trailer.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday just off of Route 34 in Hurricane in front of Hurricane High School.

The driver of the truck had just dropped off a load of material at a nearby storage facility. The truck was pulling out onto Route 34, crossing the tracks when it was hit.

Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said the driver didn’t see it coming.

“He said he looked both ways and just didn’t see anything coming,” Edwards said. “The guy behind him saw the train coming and was honking and yelling, of course that didn’t do any good.”

Both the driver of the truck and the driver of the train escaped without injuries. Edwards said minor changes in speed could have been fatal.

“If the semi would have been going just a little bit slower or the train a little bit faster, we could have had a huge difference in outcome,” he said.

The Hurricane Police Department was undergoing an investigation into the crash.
