FAIRMONT, W.Va.– Thousands turned out in the rain in Fairmont to support the United Mine Workers of America’s latest demonstration in its fight with Peabody, Arch and Patriot Coal.
More than 25 bus loads of supporters voiced their opposition to Patriot’s bankruptcy proceedings that threaten to slash benefits for current and retired workers. Negotiations between the union and Patriot have been ongoing but neither side has been able to reach an agreement that it feels is satisfactory.
“This is the greatest of gathering of union supporters and activists in the United States of America!” shouted UMWA President Cecil Roberts.
Roberts was led away in handcuffs, which has become common place in the union’s rallies across the country. He was one of 30 people arrested during the day’s protest.
The union contends Patriot was purposely set up to fail so Peabody could renegotiate workers benefits. Peabody released a statement today saying that assertion was false and that the union’s analysis of the companies assets was “deeply flawed.”
Second District Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito announced she will co-sponsor the Caring for Coal Miners Act which would guarantee those who worked for Patriot Coal would receive their benefits that are on the chopping block because of the company’s bankrupcty.
