Alpha Natural Resources announces layoffs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — More than 100 employees with Alpha Natural Resources will soon be without a job.

Company officials announced Friday that 106 employees in Nicholas, Boone, Raleigh and Greenbrier counties will be laid off. All impacted employees have been notified.

Alpha attributes low coal prices as the reason for the workforce reduction.

The company said it also is idling the Pocahontas mine in Greenbrier County and shutting down one section of the Grassy Creek No. 1 mine in Nicholas County.

Positions at other mines are being offered to 83 of the workers.
