Braxton mother accused in son’s death waives hearing

SUTTON, W.Va. — A Braxton County mother accused of denying medical care to her terminally ill son and then allowing him to die waived her preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Valerie Brown, 38, of Sutton, waived her preliminary hearing on a charge of child neglect resulting in death. Her bond was also cut in half, from $100,000 cash only to $50,000 cash or surety.

Brown was arrested last week after a trooper and a hospice worker discovered the body of 8-year-old Levi Burroughs dead inside her Sutton home along Salt Lick Road.

State police, who found the boy wrapped in a blanket and partially decomposed, said they are awaiting autopsy results.

Also on Wednesday, Brown was charged with obtaining goods under false pretenses. The new charge is unrelated to the death of Burroughs.
