Macy’s marks first year at Martinsburg fulfillment center

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Thursday marked one year since the Macy’s Fulfillment Center in Berkeley County opened for business. It is a very busy place these days.

“We are currently about 900 core employees and the workforce continues to grow,” said Macy’s spokesperson Jim Sluzewski. “In fact, before long, as we head into this fall, we’re going to start ramping up for the holiday season.”

Come November, Sluzewski said Macy’s plans to hire an estimated 700 seasonal workers.

The center, located at the Cumbo Yard Industrial Park near Interstate 81, has shipped more than 5 million online orders for Macy’s this year, said Sluzewski.

Macy’s chose the site for the center in May 2011 because of the work force and access to the interstate.

“Berkeley County and that area along the I-81 corridor is not only the right place but it makes business very easy to do,” stressed Sluzewski.

Full capacity hasn’t been reached at the 1.3 million-square-foot facility. Along with hiring a majority of its workers from within a 25-40 mile radius, Sluzewski said Macy’s wants the center to be as low-key as possible.

“You very well could be living fairly nearby and forget that [the fulfillment center] is there,” he said.
