Weis aims to fix ‘pile of crap’

DALLAS, Texas — The 1-11 Kansas Jayhawks weren’t much fun to watch last season (unless your team was playing them), but on Monday head coach Charlie Weis was plenty entertaining, especially with regard to his recruiting efforts.

His message to prospects seeking playing time at Kansas?

“Have you looked at that pile of crap out there? Have you taken a look at that?” he said. “If you don’t think you can play here, where do you think you can play? It’s a pretty simple approach.”

External expectations are once again lagging, with the Jayhawks picked last in the league.

“That’s justifiable,” Weis told reporters. “If I were you, I’d pick us in the same spot. We’ve given you no evidence or no reason to be picked anywhere other than that.”

Weis signed 15 junior college recruits in February, applying a quick-fix mentality he doesn’t necessarily plan on carrying forward. If Kansas can stabilize itself and become competitive once more in the Big 12, that’s when Weis said he will shift back to prioritizing the prep ranks. But given the sorry state of the team currently, Weis can’t wait for newcomers to develop.

“There’s a handful of (high school) guys that are ready to play when they walk in the door, but that’s the exception, not the norm,” he said. “I needed guys that could play now because, if not, I’m going to be ranked 10th in the league every year.”
