Postal distribution center set for closure in September

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. – The closure of the Clarksburg Postal Distribution Center remains on schedule. Cathy Yarosky, with the United States Postal Service, said the facility will be closed come the end of September but the beginning, of the end, has already started.

“We have already consolidated about half, of that network, from Clarksburg into Charleston. That was completed July 1,” according to Yarosky.

The close of the Clarksburg center was announced back in December 2011. Despite attempts by the union to keep the facility open the postal service made it clear with the changing nature of mail it just wasn’t an option.

“The postal service simply does not have the mail volume anymore to justify the size and the capacity, of our current mail processing network nationwide,” explained Yarosky. “We are losing approximately 25 million dollars every day.”

One hundred and five employees at the Clarksburg operation will eventually be impacted. But Yarosky stressed that doesn’t mean they’re losing their jobs.

“There are landing positions for many of them and there will be and have been some reassignments. But we do not lay anyone off,” said Yarosky.

However, some employees have chosen not to move where the jobs are.

The closure of the distribution center, in two months, will not impact customer business at the operation. The retail store and bulk mail business will continue to operate out of the current location.

Yarosky said the ultimate goal is to return the U.S. Postal Service to long term profitability while keeping mail service affordable, for its customers.
